If you're looking for an energizing, pick-me-up, this Almond Butter & Jam smoothie is the thing for you! I call it that because the flavour reminds me of eating a peanut butter and jam sandwich, which I used to do A LOT as a kid. This is a healthier version of that nostalgic sandwich without the added sugar, table salt and hydrogenated oil - all things that your body does not need.
When I make smoothies, I aim to include all 3 macronutrients - protein, carbohydrates and fat - so that they are nourishing and filling. This one is great for after a workout, or first thing in the morning, as it also has coconut water to help rehydrate the body and replace electrolytes lost in sweating, or fasting all night.

To make it, toss the following into a blender:
  • 1 banana - for a hint of sweetness, easy to digest carbs to replenish your muscles' glycogen stores used up in your workout, and potassium to help with electrolyte balance
  • 2 tablespoons almond butter - for protein and fat to help rebuild muscle tissue and provide quick energy
  • 1 1/2 cups strawberries/blueberries - for easy to digest carbs, and loads of anti-oxidant power to help with oxidation in the body produced by exercise
  • about 1 cup coconut water - to replenish lost water and electrolytes - coconut water is the drink of choice for many elite athletes (helps with muscle fatigue too)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds - for protein, good fats and micronutrients like B vitamins, calcium and magnesium - to build muscle tissue and provide quick energy
  • pinch of sea salt - to balance the sweetness and for minerals that help to replace lost electrolytes
  • handful of baby spinach (optional, but recommended as it's an easy way to get in a serving of leafy greens)

Blend on high until creamy, and drink up!

Looks delicious! I would add some dill pickles in there to add some extra crunch :) https://bubbies.com
